Chapters 1-5 Huck Finn Lit Circle 2
Chapter 5-11 Pap wanted to gain the custody of Huck because currently he didn’t have it. With Huck came all of the money that came with him. Huck didn’t want him to get the money because everytime he got money he got drunk and it all leads to him back in jail. After the widow told Pap to stop hanging around the house he took Huck and locked him up in a cabin. Huck got out in a very intelligent way. He sawed a hole in the wall but and was going to get out that way but pap came back so he had to cover it up. After pap left again he finished the sawing the hole he went down to the river and snuck away in a canoe that he found earlier that day when pap asked him to go check the lines for fish. Huck fakes his death by cutting a pig’s throat and dripping the blood on the floor to make it seem like robbers came in and killed him. An Ablitionist is a person who “favors the abolition of a practice or institution, especially capital punishment or (formerly) slavery.” At this time slavery was harsh and everyone was using it. If Huck got called an ablitionist then that would be a bad thing because he is white and at the time white people just believed in slavery. He is concerned about being called this because there would be lots of skepticism and rumors regarding him.
Ways to determine a boy pretending to be girl. -Overly feminine voice -The way he talks and uses words -Lots of makeup Ways to determine a girl pretending to be a boy -The hips would be much bigger -If the right age lot of acne because she wouldn’t use makeup to cover it up -Hair probably wouldn’t “work” since the hair is usually done differently. Lit Circle 3 Chapters 11-16 The Bible story of Solomon happened when two girls were arguing over a baby. To figure out who the baby belonged to, King Solomon said that he'd would cut the baby in half and they could each have a piece of the baby. One of the ladies said that "She was lying" and the baby was the other persons. The other women said that she was fine with that. King Solomon knew that the true mother would never let the baby die and decided to give the baby to the person who said she was lying. Jim didn't understand the story because he was confused why he would cut it in half. Jim also thought that King Solomon didn't value children. Jim gets very upset with Huck for pretending it was all a dream. He gets upset because he likes Huck quite a bit. This shows in the world today with lots of people that I meet. One time I had a friend get upset with me for not talking to them as much as I did someone else. At first this really confused me why someone would get so upset over something so little, but reading and evaluating this scene shows me that if someone gets mad at you for something fairly small it means that they care about you and want to be your good friend. The black slaves in the older days had no way of education so when things both bad and good happened there was no other reason for them to explain the things. The black slaves were not respected back in the time where the book is made. By this quote he means that by "humbling himself to a n*****." he means it is hard because they were thought of as lower so humbling himself was very hard to do. This line tells us that Huck cares about Jim. He also says that he "warn't ever sorry about it" meaning he made a choice and he stands by that choice. He wanted to turn him in but he thought about the consequences of it. He felt bad for trying to smuggle Jim through the river. The reason he ended up keeping him was because he said he would feel even worse if he would've turned him in. Lit Circle 4 Chapters 17-21 The Grangerford family is a very strange family. They're strange because of their relationship with their neighboring families. They are and have been in a feud with them for 2 years. No one in either the Grangerford or the Shepherdson family can quite remember why their in a fight. This fight isn't a normal "neighbors won't talk to each other fight" This fight had already killed a few people including a fourteen year old granger ford and eventually Buck (Hucks friend) is shot and killed. Mark Twain probably wrote this in the novel so that we could get a feel for the history of two families. Talking about the farmer and the shephard gets us thinking deeper. Farmers and ranchers throughout history were known to get into scuffles. Mentioning this in the book gives us a taste of the history of why they could possible be fighting The narrator is Huck for this part of the story. Having him as the narrator of this book changes the book completely. Everything that he thinks we know. This changes all of the events because we only know what he thinks. We get to know Huck better but all of the other characters we don't know as much. The King and he Duke are actually not a King and a Duke at all. They are two men who are both not in great situations. They decided to pretend that they were the King and Duke so that Huck and Jim would respect them. For the first little bit they did but eventually Huck realized they were fakes. The reason he didn't call them out was to avoid any problems with them. This plan puts Huck in a bad position because if there is a money reward for him then people will want to take Huck away. If the people want to take Huck then this could possibly set him and Jim up for disaster. Lit Circle 5 Chapters 22-26 The line at the bottom of the handbill says "LADIES AND CHILDREN NOT ADMITTED" This line means many different things for the guys. It would make the guys want to come because without there wives they can do so many more things. With the wives there they wouldn't be able to have as much fun but since they aren't here they can be wild. a.) There would be no use in telling Jim because they had previously talked about it. If Jim didn't believe him before he probably wouldn't have believed him now. He also didn't want to get in to an unneccesary fight with him. b.) There would be nothing to compare the Duke and King to because they have never met them before. It would be like watching one person shoot baskets and judging whether they are good or bad without watching anyone else shoot. The reason that Huck expresses himself this way is because he felt really bad. He felt bad because he deceived a family that was already struggling from the loss of a family member. So him referring to the entire human race is him referring to that humans do things like this everyday and it should be something to be ashamed about. The doctor probably has a lot of experience with people and is probably at the point where he is very attention to detail. He mentions that while the king is giving his speech the doctor can easily see that the accent is terrible. The reason that they decided to not leave in the night was the same reason that they were there in the first place. They wanted more money than they had already gotten with the 6000 that they have. They're plan to get even more money was to be patient so that the land and slaves would sell. Lit Circle 6 Chapters 27-30 They would "stay up with the dead" for a couple big reasons. One is for the safety of the persons body. They don't want the body to be consumed by any scavenging animals. They also want to make sure that the person is actually dead because they didn't have the technology back then to know for sure Even though Huck on the outside my seem like a really tough person with joining the gang and all he is actually a very nice person. He has a lot of sympathy for people especially when those people are struggling with something. They used a couple of different methods to figure out who the brothers were and who the frauds were. They had all of the people put their signature down on a piece of paper. When they were done it showed that the King and the Duke are fakes. The Harvey that is the actual Harvey remembers the brother having a tattoo on the chest. The King remembered that as well and then they went and talked to the guy who dressed the body who told them which tattoo he had. Lit Circle 7 Chapters 31-35 You can't pray a lie means that it isn't going to work because God knows the truth so he won't help you out with a lie. He is praying about his lie of helping Jim escape slavery and taking him away from Miss Watson. He was writing a letter to Miss Watson because he felt bad about Jim but then a couple things kept him from sending it and then in the end, ripping it up. He didn't want to do that because it would get him in a rough place because he would be known as the guy who helped a slave escape. He also remembered all of the great memories of him when he was with Jim. I think that Huck really didn't want to help but he felt bad about this so that when Tom said that he would Huck understood that he had to help. It is kind of like that moment when you have to do something right but something that is hard. He thinks that even though humans can do good things but in the end humans aren't really good people at all. He thinks that they don't have a good conscience and they are just mean and rude. Of all the reasons that there could be, the reason is that Tom wants it to be "stylish". He doesn't care that it will take longer he thinks it's worth the extra fifteen minutes for a more elaborate plan. Lit Circle 8 Toms Motivation- Make it as dramatic as possible. You could say Tom is doing this for the wrong reason. Tom loves excitement and he wants this to be exciting and a dramatic experience Huck's Motivation- Get Jim out because he likes him a as a person. Throughout the book Huck has gained lots of respect for Jim and he actually like him as a person. They say let on when they something is happening that they are pretending about. They say this a lot because they pretend a lot throughout the sequence. He is writing the letters because its Tom. His personality is to make everything fun and exciting. He sends the letters so that something goes wrong and the whole sequence becomes more exciting. It is satire because it's funny that he actually makes it that hard for himself. It's kind of sad because everyone does this kind of thing. Lots of people that I know including myself tend to make things super hard for themselves. They say this because of Jim's train of thought when Tom got shot. He decided that he wouldn't let the raft leave and they wouldn't be able to leave until Tom was able to see a doctor. This was hard for him because he sacrificed everything for them by waiting there longer. Lit Circle 9 |
